Appellate attorney Matt Nelson discusses trial skills during WMU-Cooley Law School speaker series
Matt Nelson, an experienced appellate attorney with Warner Norcross + Judd, was the first speaker during WMU-Cooley Law School’s three-part speaker series on trial skills at the law school’s Grand Rapids campus on Saturday, June 8.
Nelson, who argued in front of the United States Supreme Court in Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians v. Patchak in 2012, also appeared on the merits in two other Supreme Court cases, Lee v. United States and Star Athletics v. Varsity Brands. He has also argued in front of the Michigan State Supreme Court several times, and multiple Federal Appellate Circuit Courts.
During Nelson’s presentation on opening arguments, he spoke about his experiences, gave advice on oral argument and brief writing, and answered law students’ questions.
“Mr. Nelson's speech was an informative and engaging event, a fantastic way to begin the three-part series,” said WMU-Cooley student Erin Geschwendt, who is vice president of the campus’s Moot Court.
Upcoming speakers will highlight direct and cross examination and discuss the importance of closing arguments.
