Pearl Zuchlewski to deliver I. Goodman Cohen lecture

Prominent New York City employment attorney Pearl Zuchlewski will deliver the 27th annual I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Law School's Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium. (Reception at 6 p.m.) Zuchlewski's lecture is titled "Electronic Discovery: The Creative Uses and Suspect Misuses of a Developing Litigation Device." According to Wayne Law Distinguished Professor Robert Sedler, traditional discovery in civil litigation has been revolutionized in many respects by the exchange of information in electronic format. In 2006, the United States Supreme Court added Rule 34 to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure to provide for and regulate electronic discovery. Zuchlewski will explain how electronic discovery may significantly expand the scope of discovery in civil litigation, with the resultant betterment of the litigation process. She also will discuss how electronic discovery may lead to abuses of the litigation process. The I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy was established through the generosity of the family of the late I. Goodman Cohen, a prominent trial attorney who was active in the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association. Each year, a leading jurist is invited to the Law School to deliver a public lecture on an aspect of trial advocacy. In addition, the speaker is invited to informal meetings with students and faculty. The lecture is intended to supplement the Law School's training program in trial skills and add to the variety of professional perspectives students receive during their time at the Law School. "We are honored that Ms. Zuchlewski has accepted our invitation to deliver the 27th annual I. Goodman Cohen Lecture," said Sedler, who also serves as the event organizer to the Cohen Lecture Series. "She is a well-known and respected leader in the employment law community and will provide lecture attendees with a dynamic and informative lecture." Zuchlewski, a partner in Kraus and Zuchlewski LLP, has practiced law in New York City for more than 25 years. She was a partner at Goodman and Zuchlewski LLP, and practiced at Simpson Thatcher and Bartlett. She also was a staff attorney for the National Labor Relations Board. She is a former chair of the New York State Bar Association's (NYSBA) Labor and Employment Section, and she continues to serve on the section's Executive Committee and as a section representative to the NYSBA House of Delegates. Zuchlewski also is an active member of the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section's Individual Employee Rights and Responsibilities Committee, the National Employment Lawyers Association and the Association of the Bar in the City of New York (ABCNY). As a former member of the ABCNY's Labor and Employment Law Committee, she participated in the drafting of the Model Rules for the Arbitration of Employment Disputes.
