Redistricting Forum at Cooley Law School

The League of Women Voters of Michigan, the League of Women Voters of the Lansing Area and Thomas M. Cooley Law School are sponsors and the Michigan Redistricting Collaborative and the MSU Women's Resource Center are co-sponsors of a non-partisan forum: Redistricting: Not Just for Insiders on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in Room 911 on the 9th floor of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School Lansing Campus (corner of Washtenaw and Capitol), 300 South Capitol Avenue, Lansing. Maps for Michigan's new Congressional and State legislative districts were signed into law in August and will remain in place for a decade. This forum reviews the current processes and presents alternative approaches, with an eye to making future redistricting efforts more responsive to citizen and community interests. The panel will feature the following speakers. LWVMI President, Sue Smith, will offer an overview of the 2011 redistricting process. Rep. Rasida Tlaib, Michigan House of Representatives (12th District) will talk about the community impacts of the decision to split her Southwest Detroit district. Rep. John Walsh, Michigan House of Representative (District 19) will talk about his proposal to transfer redistricting responsibilities to the Legislative Service Bureau. Jeff Guilfoyle, President of the Citizens Research Council (CRC) of Michigan will offer the CRC's proposal to include redistricting provisions in the State Constitution. Past President of the League of Women Voters of the United States, Mary Wilson, will offer her perspective on alternative redistricting methods used in other states. The forum will be moderated by former State Representative, Lynn Jondahl. The Michigan Redistricting Collaborative, the Citizens Research Council and the MSU Women's Resource Center are co-sponsoring this forum.
