Barb Foley, Chapter 13 Trustee, speaking before Ingham County Bar Association Bankruptcy Section on May 21st, announced that Chapter 13 bankruptcy debtors are now able to make their payments online using ePay. The service began on June third.
The Online Payment System, she explained to the group assembled at the State Bar Building in Lansing, is an approved alternative to use of cashier's checks or money orders to make payments on debt. Debtors may use their bank checking or savings accounts to make direct online payments to the Bankruptcy Court. This is an instant payment system that provides a verifiable, trustworthy, and convenient payment option.
The ePay Online Payment Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for acceptance of plan payments. The service is ideal for:
* Direct pay debtors who usually mail their payments to the court,
* Additional plan provision payments such as tax refunds, bonuses, or extra disposable income, or
* An alternative option for last-minute payment prior to Motion to Dismiss hearings.
The online service, Foley noted, allows for faster payment processing and debtor support through the Trustee website and e-mail.
Debtors who use the Online Payment System must have access to an Internet connection, a checking or savings account, and a valid, current e-mail address. Users must also know their case number and the last four digits of their social security number. That information creates their payment identification (Payment ID).
Once the Payment ID is validated against the data from the Trustee's case management system, payment can be made. The system will then generate an e-mail notifying the debtor of the accepted registration. Debtors can generally make a payment immediately after registration.
Making payments, Foley explained, is easy. The debtor's payment page displays basic case information, stores up to five previously used Checking/Savings accounts for future use, allows a debtor to view scheduled payments and payment history, and automatically generates e-mail to the debtor when payments are submitted.
