ABA President appoints Judge Donald Allen to ABA Commission

Judge Donald Allen of the 55th District Court in Ingham County has been appointed by American Bar Association President James R. Silkenat as a member of the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs. This Commission supports the creation and maintenance of state level programs to assist lawyers and judges battling addiction and/or mental health issues.

Judge Allen is the former chairman of the State Bar of Michigan Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program (LJAP).  LJAP is one of the state level programs supported by the ABA Commission on which Judge Allen will now serve.  LJAP holds lawyers and judges in Michigan accountable while helping them resolve personal impairments.  This is done through mandating compliance with recommendations from relevant experts.  Individuals are given peer mentors to assist in successfully completing mandated courses of treatment.

The primary goal of lawyers and judges assistance programs is ensuring that the public is protected while helping participants resolve their personal challenges.

“Lawyer Assistance Programs work at the International, national, and state levels to assist those in our legal community who are in need,” said Judge Allen, “I am looking forward to working with the committee to support our judges and lawyers.”

The ABA is one of the country’s oldest voluntary professional organizations with nearly 400,000 members nationwide and is focused on improving the legal profession.

Judge Allen will serve as co-chair of the ABA Commission's Diversity Committee and serve on the Judicial Outreach Committee. Judge Allen is the presiding judge of 55 District Court’s Sobriety Court and was formerly the Director of the Michigan Office on Drug Control Policy.
