On October 17th, the 55th District Court was the scene of the retirement party for Jim Dahl, Magistrate for the court. Dahl has been with the court since 1992.
He recalls when he came to the court to interview. “At the time I was Chief of Police in Sunfield, MI in Eaton County,” he said. “A friend and I applied and were pre-selected to be interviewed. I wasn’t too serious about it, I just wanted to have some time away from the office and lunch with my friend.”
That interview was a turning point. He was offered the position of Magistrate. He accepted.
After 21 years serving as magistrate, he is taking two days off and then will report to Eaton County Courts where he will continue to serve the public as Assistant Trial Court Administrator.
“I knew that Jim Dahl would always do what was best for the court,” said Judge Thomas Boyd, 55th District Court, presenting Dahl with a plague in recognition of his years of service. “I never questioned his motives and intentions—he always did what was best for the citizens of Ingham County.”
Asked if he would miss being Magistrate, he said while he would miss the variety of people who came before him, he would not miss the calls at 3 a.m. from the police to approve a search warrant.
Dahl is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
