Survey shows public is satisfied with district court’s performance

In a change of roles, the public was given a chance to render a verdict regarding their level of satisfaction with court performance. Using a survey administered in courts statewide, 54A District Court asked questions about access, timeliness, fairness and whether users were treated with cour tesy and respect, among other topics.

“Input from the public is helping us improve service for court users,” said Chief Judge Louise Alderson. “While the verdict from the public is positive, we are always looking for ways to reform court operations in ways that both increase eff iciency and make coming to court a positive experience.”

Highlights from the survey include:

• 95% of court users felt they were treated with courtesy and respect by court staff.

• 89% of court users felt they were treated with courtesy and respect by the judge or magistrate.

• 89% of courts users were able to get their business done in a reasonable amount of time.

“We want all people who step into our court to be satisfied with how they were treated,” said Court Administrator, Anethia Brewer. “54A conducted surveys before the mandate because it is important to know how you are performing as a public entity.”

Developed with input from judges and court administrators statewide and tabulated by the State Court Administrative Office, the survey enables courts
to identify strengths, provide positive feedback to employees, and target areas for improvement. The survey was completed by a range of court users, including parties to cases, attorneys, jurors, and others.

The public satisfaction survey is part of a statewide initiative of the Michigan Supreme Court and the State Court Administrative Office to measure and report on court performance. More than 26,000 surveys were completed in courts throughout Michigan. Statewide results are available at www.courts.mi.gov.

The survey will be conducted annually so 54A District Court can monitor changes and identify further opportunities to improve service to the public.
