The Jackson Business and Professional Women (BPW) and Harriet A. Myer Business and Professional Women have announced their awardees of their 2011 Person of Achievement at BPW Michigan's Fall Conference October 15 at a dinner held in Mackinaw City.
The civic organizations named Stefanie Riggs and Melissa Woodhurst as their 2011 Person of Achievement.
Twelve of the sixteen Michigan Business and Professional Women organizations were in attendance at the event.
Each year the Business and Professional Women organization, with chapters thourghout the country, honor individuals who "exemplify the qualities of outstanding dedication to BPW and enthusiastic willingness to help other women as well as significant contributions to the community and BPW organization," a spokesperson said.
Stefanie Riggs, a member of Jackson BPW since 2009 is currently Jackson BPW vice-president and has served as treasurer.
An active member of the Jackson community, Riggs has served on the board of directors for the Jackson County Rose Festival for six years and has been president five.
She is a founding member of the Women's Leadership Council of the United Way, and works with the Alzheimer's Association Michigan Great Lakes Chapter to promote awareness and raise funds for research and programming.
A member of Kiwanis Club of Jackson she is chair of Community Involvement/Services and has served as publicity chair and was an appointee to the Jackson County Friend of the Court Advisory Board in 1999.
Earlier this year Riggs received the Susan B. Anthony Award and was a 2011 and is a 2012 Athena Award Nominee.
She is director of marketing and public relations for Lloyd Ganton Retirement Centers.
Melissa Woodhurst joined the Harriet A. Myer BPW in December 2009. She currently is vice president.
She is employed by the Jackson Downtown Development Authority. In 2010 Melissa was chosen as Jackson Magazine's "30 And Under'' for making Jackson a better place to live, work and play.
However, Woodhurst's community activism is no recent establishment. In 2008 she became a ''Big'' for Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2009 she was asked to join the board of directors, where she remains today.
Woodhurst also sits on the of Directors for Partnership Park, and is an active member of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.
