500 area middle schools students participating in Challenge Day

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the Jackson Human Relations Commission partnered to create the MLK Diversity Committee which hosts an annual breakfast to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. The breakfast will be on Friday, January 13, 2012 with keynote speaker Benny Napoleon, Wayne County Sheriff. Proceeds from the annual MLK Diversity Breakfast help students in Jackson County participate in Challenge Day, a program designed to assist schools in becoming places where every child feels safe, loved and celebrated by inspiring youth to ''be the change they want to see'' and giving them the tools and confidence to help stop bullying and alienation in their schools. (www.challengeday.org) 500 students from twelve county middle schools and diVinci Institute will be participating in Challenge Day on November 7, 8, 9 and 10, 2011. After the program, a group of students from each school are encouraged to identify projects and activities for their schools that will reinforce the lessons learned at Challenge Day. School personnel and community volunteers facilitate the student selected projects. Participating middle schools include Columbia, Concord, daVinci Institute, East Jackson, Grass Lake, Hanover Horton, Michigan Center, Middle School at Parkside, Springport, Napoleon, Northwest, Vandercook Lake, and Western.
