Campaign sets sail Sept. 7
Boat race kicks off United Way campaign
United Way of Jackson County will start its 2012 fundraising effort with a big splash. Several splashes, actually, as about16 crews will design, build and paddle cardboard boats to raise funds and awareness for United Way.
The competition will take place at the Cascades Falls Urban Fisheries Pond on Friday, September 7 at 3 pm. The public is invited to attend and cheer on their favorite team.
"The cardboard boat race is a great way to come together and support the community, while having a good time for a good cause," said Bruce Goldsen, president of Jackson Radio Works and volunteer campaign chair for United Way of Jackson County. "We thank everyone who's joined our United Way fleet, and invite the community to join us at the boat race and to support our campaign."
There are still a few spots available for organizations that would like to build a boat and take part in the festivities. Interested parties should contact Beth Shafer at (517) 796-5119 or bshafer@uwjackson.org for more information. Complete registration materials are available at the United Way website, www. uwjackson.org. A short video of similar cardboard boat races can also be viewed on the website.
The United Way of Jackson County provides opportunities for a better life for all Jackson County residents by focusing on the specific challenges facing our community: helping children succeed in school, making sure families are financially stable, and helping people achieve and maintain good health.
