Attorney throws hat in ring for City Council

Jackson attorney and local business owner Craig Pappin is seeking election to the Jackson City Council to represent Jackson's 4th Ward, currently held by Councilwoman Laura Dwyer Schlecte, who on March 4 announced her candidacy for city Mayor.
Pappin cites his desire to improve the city by creating a non-adversarial and more favorable business climate, which in turn would result in further business development, investment, and hiring. "Currently, Jackson is at a competitive disadvantage in many respects," he says. Additionally, he advocates fostering positive relationships with City neighbors and reducing costs where feasible.
Pappin's other priorities include ensuring a strong law enforcement presence as well as maintaining other critical city services. "We have become a high tax and low service community," he says, citing examples such as the poor condition of some roads, and the derailment of the former leaf pickup service. "We need to get more value out of the high taxes we already pay."
Pappin earned a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, in Criminal Justice from Siena Heights University in Adrian; holds associates degrees with High Honors in Corrections and Law Enforcement from Jackson Community College; an associates degree from the Community College of the Air Force; and earned his law degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, studying full time, while also working since January 2009 as a judicial law clerk and court bailiff for Judge John G. McBain, chief circuit court judge in Jackson.
A member of the Jackson Bar Association, Pappin is now an attorney at Brown Raduazo & Hilderley PLLC, in Jackson, where he focuses on family law and criminal defense cases.
This is Pappin's second shot at a political spot, having run in 2012 as a Republican candidate for Jackson County Prosecutor.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Pappin spent five years on active duty as a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) and continues to serve as a special agent with AFOSI in the USAF Reserve. He received several Air Force Commendation Medals and Air Force Achievement Medals for his skills.
After leaving active duty with the U.S. Air Force, the Pinconning native returned to Michigan and founded a retail business that he and his wife Debbie operated in Alpena before moving to Jackson. Designs Plus specializes in gifts, trophies, glass etching and engraving.
Pappin went back to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserve after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. At the Pentagon within days after the attack, he observed the damage in person. He also served in a six-month active mobilization in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
