Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) recently conducted “Expanding your Family Law Practice: Navigating the Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Family Courts,” a training session for attorneys in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties on the Warren campus of Macomb Community College.
The training was free to attorneys who agreed to take a pro bono family law case from LAD.
Featured speakers included Macomb County Circuit Court Chief Judge Mark Switalski of the Family Division, Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Joan Young, who presides over the family division and Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Maria Oxholm, presiding judge of the Family Division.
Other speakers were Lynn Davidson, Macomb County Friend of the Court; Suzanne Hollyer, Oakland County Friend of the Court; Zenell Brown, Wayne County Friend of the Court; Laurel Stuart-Fink of Laurel Stuart-Fink, PLLC; and Megan Widman, MSW, of HAVEN (Help Against Violent Encounters Now) in Oakland County.
The presenters focused on the different procedures, forms and programs in the family law courts in the three counties and the mistakes that attorneys often make when they cross county lines.
“We greatly appreciate the generosity of our speakers who took the time to provide attendees with detailed information on the differences in domestic practice in their respective counties,” said Lynda Krupp, managing attorney of LAD’s Private Attorney Involvement Unit.
LAD is Michigan’s oldest and largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents.
It serves metropolitan Detroit through its offices in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
It also represents criminal defendants in Wayne County and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
Including brief consultations and comprehensive legal services, the public law firm handles some 15,000 legal matters yearly.
