Prof honored for animal law work

The Animal Law Committee of the American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section will honor David S. Favre of East Lansing with the Excellence in the Advancement of Animal Law Award.

 

Presented annually, the award recognizes work by a member or leader of an international, national, regional, state or local bar association’s animal law committee, who has advanced the humane treatment of animals.

 

The award will be presented to Favre during the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco next month.

 

Favre is a professor of law at Michigan State University College of Law where he teaches courses in animal law, international environmental Law, property and wildlife law.  

 

From 1999 to 2000, Favre served as interim dean at Michigan State University Detroit College of Law, and was interim dean through its transition from Detroit College of Law to Michigan State University Detroit College of Law from 1993 to 1996.

 

He was a visiting professor for the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2007 where he concentrated his course presentation on animal law.

 

Before joining the Michigan faculty in 1976, Favre was a practicing lawyer in Virginia.

 

Favre earned his Juris Doctor from the College of William and Mary in 1973 and his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Virginia in 1968.

 

Favre has written several articles and books dealing with animal issues covering topics such as animal cruelty, wildlife law, the use of animals for scientific research, and international control of animal trade.

 

His books include Animal Law and Dog Behavior, Animal Law: Welfare, Interest, and Rights, and International Trade in Endangered Species.

 

He also has presented to international audiences on these topics.

 

Favre is editor-in-chief of the Animal Legal and Historical Web Center and a national officer for both the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the ABA Committee on Animal Law.

 

He has served as a committee member of the American Association of Law Schools recently-created Animal Committee since 2008 and has served on the board of directors and as an officer of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

 

 He was a member of the board of directors for the National Center for Animal Law from 2003 to 2004 and served on the board of directors and as an officer for the Species Survival Network from 1997 to 2001.
