State Bar section co-hosts social justice discussion

“Our Village: A Conference on Social Justice Panel Discussion” will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit.
The 10 a.m. event will be hosted by the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section (YLS), the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association, the Social Justice Committee of Hartford, the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion as well as the  Partnership for a Drug Free Detroit.
It is part of a two-day Social Justice Conference.
“One of the issues impacting our community is the large percentage of African American males who have encountered the criminal justice system,” observed program Co-Chairperson Brandy Robinson. “By having meaningful dialogue on the issue, perhaps we can reverse the trend.”
Robinson is also the chair-elect of the State Bar YLS and president of the Wolverine Bar Association.
The panel will feature keynote speaker Professor Michelle Alexander, a former Supreme Court law clerk to Justice Harry Blackmun, who currently holds a joint appointment with Moritz College of Law and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University.
Alexander is the author of “The New Jim Crow — Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.”
Other panel members include former U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Collins; Jeffrey Edison; Mark Francher, of the American Civil Rights Union; Ron Scott, of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality; and Dr. Ronald Trent, of the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion.
“The program’s goal is to have a meaningful discussion that includes and respects diverse views on this topic,” said program Chairperson Angelique Strong Marks. Marks is the general counsel at Behr America and a State Bar Commissioner.
The panel discussion will be immediately followed by a luncheon and a keynote address by Michelle Alexander. Limited quantities of complimentary tickets are available. To make a reservation, e-mail Angelique Strong Marks at strongangelique@hotmail.com. These tickets provide each guest with admission to the entire two-day conference.
