Suspect arraigned on two additional charges

DETROIT (AP) — A lawyer is suggesting he will challenge the government’s case against a Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up an airliner as it approached Detroit last Christmas Day.
Anthony Chambers spoke recently after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was arraigned on two additional charges in federal court in Detroit.
The 24-year-old man is accused of trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam by igniting an explosive in his underwear.
The government added two charges the day before, including conspiring with others in the failed attack.
A judge entered a not-guilty plea on Abdulmutallab’s behalf. He is acting as his own lawyer but is being advised by Chambers.
Chambers says “we’ll see what’s left” of the case after he files motions in the weeks ahead. He didn’t elaborate.

Decision on serial stabbing trial delayed

FLINT (AP) — Prosecutors in Flint need more time to present evidence as they try to persuade a judge that a man described as a serial killer should face a third murder trial.
The Genesee County prosecutor’s office says a key witness was not available recently so the hearing will resume on January 11. A judge heard some testimony about the death of Darwin Marshall, who was fatally stabbed in Flint on July 26.
Elias Abuelazam already faces two murder trials and five attempted murder trials for a series of stabbings in the Flint area. He’s also charged with attempted murder in Toledo, Ohio, and suspected in similar attacks in Leesburg, Va., where he once lived.
Abuelazam was arrested in Atlanta while trying to fly to his native country, Israel.

U.S. Patent Office to open Detroit site

DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has picked Detroit as the place to open its first satellite facility.
Federal officials say the new office could be open in mid-2011 with about 100 patent examiners and other employees.
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said opening satellite offices away from the Washington area is part of the agency’s strategy to become more efficient.
It now takes about three years to approve or reject a patent application and officials want to cut that to one year.
Officials said Detroit was chosen because of the area’s high percentage of scientists and engineers.
