The Thomas M. Cooley Law School launched a Florida expansion of its Service to Soldiers: Legal Assistance Referral Program recently with a “basic training” session that covered some of the basics of representing military clients. Topics included estate planning, family law, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act (USERRA). Speakers included (left to right) Col. John Odom; John Nussbaumer, associate dean and Cooley professor; Heather Spielmaker, director of the Center for Ethics, Service and Professionalism at Cooley; Amy Timmer, associate dean of students and professionalism and professor at Cooley; Brig. Gen. Michael McDaniel; and, Lt. Col. George McHugh. Service to Soldiers offers referrals to pro bono attorneys who assist members of the military in resolving legal issues.
More than 70 attorneys attended Cooley Law School’s “basic training” session and listened as Brig. Gen. Michael McDaniel discussed representing military clients. Cooley’s Service to Soldiers: Legal Assistance Referral Program originated in Michigan and is now expanding to Florida to help ease the legal burden for the state’s military members. Organizers of the event also shared opportunities with attendees for supporting military members and families through pro bono service.
