Report available on 2010 Bench Bar Conference

Those who practice in Michigan’s appellate courts on a regular basis can obtain important information by attending the  Michigan Appellate Bench Bar Conference.

But those who missed last year’s conference can benefit from the extensive research, discussions and practice pointers by reading a newly-released report on the conference.

The Bench Bar Conference Committee recently completed and published its summary of the 2010 event held last June in Plymouth.

It includes panel discussions on civility and collegiality in Michigan appellate practice, tips on filing and responding to emergency appeals and the complex issues that arise when courts follow decisions from other jurisdictions.

“This summary is a must-have reference for attendees of last year’s conference and all Michigan appellate attorneys,” said conference coordinator Mary Massaron Ross, a partner and the Appellate Law Practice Group Leader at the law firm of Plunkett Cooney in Detroit. “I would like to congratulate the conference committee members and those who spent countless hours preparing this summary.”

Phillip J. DeRosier, a member and appellate attorney with the law firm Dickinson Wright in Detroit, served as Summary Report Editor for the 62-page conference debrief, which is available for free in PDF format on the Michigan Appellate Bench Bar Conference Foundation and State Bar of Michigan Appellate Practice Section Web sites.

The report includes extensive detail on the information covered during the following conference breakout, lunch and plenary sessions:

• The Case for Civility and Collegiality: Fostering Integrity and Respect for the System

• Conversations with the Michigan Bench and Bar Break Sessions

• Keynote remarks by Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Margret Robb

• Technical Issues in Practice Areas

• Know Your Court Breakout Sessions

• Top Tips & Pet Peeves - Emergency Filings

• Collegiality Between Parallel Courts

• Redux - Civility & Collegiality: From Advocacy to Sharp Practices and Beyond

• Effective Brief Writing

The Michigan Appellate Bench Bar is a cooperative effort between the Michigan Supreme Court, the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Appellate Bench Bar Conference Foundation, and the State Bar of Michigan Appellate Practice Section, with substantial financial support from the DeWitt C. Holbrook Memorial Fund.
