Obituary: Donald Housey

Donald Housey

Donald Housey, who practiced law for 40 years and served as Macomb County Probate Court administrator for nearly a decade, died of a heart attack Feb. 16 at his vacation home in Florida. He was 70.

Housey was appointed court administrator and probate register in 2001, was dismissed in 2010 and filed a whistleblower lawsuit claiming the action was the result of complaints he made to state investigators.

The case was pending at the time of death.

Earlier, Housey served for 14 years as a chief referee and court attorney at probate court.

Housey was involved in a variety of community groups and was past president of The Resolution Center and past chairman of the Metro East Chamber of Commerce.

He received the 2011 Pioneering Spirit Award from the National Association of Women Business Owners and was honored with the NAWBO Public Policy Advocate honor in 1998.

The Resolution Center gave Housey its Volunteer Mediator of the Year Award in 1997 and the Lawrence Beckett Volunteer Mediator of the Year Award in 2000.

Housey also was owner of Mitch’s On the River in Detroit, a bar originally opened by his father as Pete’s Bar in 1956.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; daughter Candina; three sisters and four brothers.
