The National Bar Association (NBA) has honored newly appointed Cooley Law School Professor Carolyn House Stewart with the Gertrude E. Rush Award.
Named for the only woman co-founder of the NBA, the award recognizes recipients for their pioneering spirits, community and professional leadership, concern for human and civil rights, and for being a model of excellence in legal education.
“Carolyn House Stewart best exemplifies the standards set for this award,” said Daryl D. Parks, president of the NBA. “Her dedication to the legal profession and her community shine through in her daily work and her commitment to legal education.”
Stewart has accepted a faculty appointment to teach at Cooley’s new campus in Riverview, Florida, beginning next month.
Currently, she is a shareholder in Macfarlane, Ferguson & McMullen, where she has handled cases in the civil litigation, casualty and labor law sections since 1994.
Stewart was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1978 after earning her J.D. at the University of South Carolina.
She has practiced before the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Southern Districts of Florida and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th and 11th Circuits.
She has served as a government lawyer in Florida at both the state and county levels and as in-house corporate counsel for Fortune 500 companies.
“We are proud that Carolyn is being singled out for recognition among her peers,” said Jeff Martlew, associate dean of Cooley’s Tampa Bay campus. “Her stellar career coupled with her dedication to the communities surrounding Tampa Bay, make her a wonderful role model.”
Stewart said she has “always believed it is essential to give back to the community and to reach out to new attorneys as well as those who are considering law school.
“I’m also looking forward to beginning a new chapter in my legal career as a Cooley professor,” she said.
