Lawyer trust accounts discussed at seminar
The State Bar of Michigan will hold a half-day seminar on Tuesday, June 19 featuring presentations on how to ethically manage lawyer trust accounts and effectively use forms, checklists and guidelines for recordkeeping.
The seminar is scheduled from 1:30-4:15 p.m. at Cooley Law School, Room 115, 3475 Plymouth Rd, Ann Arbor.
The cost is $50 for lawyers, $25 for non-lawyers.
Participants will receive practical information and resources as well as materials prepared by the featured presenters: SBM Professional Standards Investigative Counsel Danon Goodrum-Garland, SBM Professional Standards Service Counsel Nkrumah Johnson-Wynn, and Attorney Grievance Commission Senior Associate Counsel Rhonda Pozehl.

Suit that threatened Detroit finances tossed
MASON (AP) — A lawsuit that threatened a delicate financial deal between debt-ridden Detroit and the state of Michigan was thrown out recently after a lawyer for Mayor Dave Bing intervened and said the city’s top attorney had no authority to challenge the agreement.
The decision by an Ingham County judge was the latest turn in a strange dispute involving Detroit’s elected leaders and the head of the city’s law office, Krystal Crittendon, who said she could act independently and didn’t have to obey Bing’s plea to ax the lawsuit.
Michael Hodge, a lawyer in private practice, asked Judge William Collette to dismiss the case on behalf of the mayor’s office.
The judge said he’d never seen a case “where the corporation counsel acts outside the mayor’s authority. ... This is such an obvious issue.”
Suit filed over Flint’s emergency manager
FLINT (AP) — Three Flint residents have filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the city’s emergency financial manager, claiming the appointment violates the state constitution.
The Flint Journal reports Samuel Sutton Jr., Willie Timmons and Woody Etherly Jr. Sued Wednesday in Ingham County Circuit Court.
They claim the city is being forced to pay for the emergency manager and his actions, making it an unfunded mandate.
Michael Brown was appointed by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder last year and his $170,000 annual salary is paid by the city. Brown says he plans to refer the matter to the city’s legal department.
The lawsuit also seeks to void Brown’s actions while in office.
Snyder is among those named in the lawsuit.
