Court clears guides who helped Indian

PETOSKEY (AP) — The Michigan appeals court has reversed the misdemeanor convictions of two guides who were found guilty of killing a bear in Emmet County.

Prosecutors had argued that William McNeight and Blaine Levigne couldn’t help an American Indian hunt for bear in 2010, even though the Indian was allowed
to pursue the animal out of season.

The appeals court says Michigan law doesn’t stop people from assisting someone during a lawful bear hunt.

The court notes there’s no evidence that the guides possessed a gun, crossbow or bow and arrow.

State sues over claims it owes Detroit $5M

DETROIT (AP) — The state has filed a lawsuit disputing claims that it owes nearly $5 million to the city of Detroit for a water bill.

The Detroit News reported Thursday the state sued in Wayne County Circuit Court to block a city hearing over the claim, saying Detroit failed to provide documentation for the charge.

Krystal Crittendon, the city’s top lawyer, made an issue of the claim when she unsuccessfully sued to block an agreement between Detroit and the state to fix the city’s finances.

The state’s lawsuit was filed last month by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. It says Detroit overcharged the state for water at the Michigan State Fairgrounds.

The city’s water department is seeking the law department’s advice on how to handle the dispute.

Not all Flint stabbing cases may go to trial

FLINT (AP) — A prosecutor handling charges from a 2010 stabbing spree in the Flint area says he’ll talk to victims and relatives about offering plea deals to close the remaining cases.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says he needs to balance their feelings with the costs of taking eight more cases to trial.

Elias Abuelazam was sentenced to life in prison without parole recently, a month after being convicted in the first murder trial.

Abuelazam still faces two murder trials and six attempted murder trials. He’s also charged with attempted murder in Toledo, Ohio.

It’s not known if the 35-year-old Abuelazam is even interested in settling the remaining cases.

The next court hearing won’t occur until near Labor Day.
