The Madison’s Mt. Clemens Lawyers Softball League ended its 2012 season with Johnny G’s team winning the first place trophy and the Bath City Bistro squad capturing the Championship Tournament.

Johnny G’s was managed by Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and Assistant Prosecutor Gordon Hosbein while Doug Hamel and Erich Goetz coached the Bath City Bistro squad.

Although Bath City finished in last place in the regular season, that team managed to win two games on the first night of the playoffs, defeating the defending champ Johnny G’s in the second game.

That triumph sent Bath City Bistro to the 2012 championship game on July 18 against Orleans Billiards Cafe, managed by Chuck Trickey. Bath City prevailed 12-4, giving Hamel his first championship in lawyers league play.

Hamel has played in various lawyers softball leagues since the 1970s.

This is the third year for the league, which features teams comprised of lawyers and law students. Sponsors besides Johnny G’s, Bath City Bistro and Orleans Billiards Cafe are Gus’s Coney Island and The Rec Bowl.

Each week, an after-game party was held at one of the team sponsors, with the entire league attending.

Local law firms and legal service companies also provide pizza, burgers or coney dogs for the players and spectators who gather after the contests.

League co-commissioners Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Mark Switalski and Chuck Trickey agreed it was gratifying that a different team has won the championship trophy each of the first three years of the league.

The league has established a tradition of inscribing the names of every player of each championship team on the trophy, which will be on display at Madison’s Pub — the principal league sponsor — after it has been enjoyed by members of the Bath City Bistro squad.
