Bar association hosts wine tasting event
The South Asian Bar Association of Michigan will host a Wine Tasting event on Thursday, November 8 at Tallulah in Birmingham.
The get-together, from 6:30-9 p.m., is sponsored by Rader, Fishman, & Grauer PLLC; Clark Hill PLC; Lawrence Tech; and Structured Financial Associates.
For those who register before the event, the cost is $30 for attorneys and $20 for law students; tickets are $40 at the door.

Judge calls time-out in Kilpatrick trial
DETROIT (AP) — The corruption trial of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is on hold until at least Monday while a defense lawyer recovers from a health problem.
Federal Judge Nancy Edmunds says Gerald Evelyn is in a hospital in stable condition. Evelyn is representing Kilpatrick buddy Bobby Ferguson, who was a Detroit contractor.
Evelyn was rushed to a hospital last Monday after asking for a break while questioning a witness. The trial started in mid-September and could stretch into the new year.
Ferguson, Kilpatrick, Kilpatrick’s father Bernard and former Detroit boss Victor Mercado are charged with a racketeering conspiracy and other crimes.
Kilpatrick quit the mayor’s office in 2008 in a different scandal.

Family sues FBI in fatal shooting of iman
DETROIT (AP) — The family of a Detroit mosque leader is suing FBI agents, saying his rights were violated when he was gunned down during a raid.
Luqman Abdullah was killed when agents tried to arrest him at a Dearborn warehouse in 2009. He and his allies were accused of dealing stolen goods in an FBI sting operation.
A lawsuit filed recently in federal court accuses the FBI of using excessive force in Abdullah’s death. He was shot 20 times. The FBI has defended what happened, saying Abdullah was armed and resisted arrest.
The state attorney general said the shooting was justified. The Justice Department’s civil rights division also found no wrongdoing.
Abdullah was married and had 10 children.

Kings reach deal in exploding ball case
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Sacramento Kings have settled a lawsuit over an exercise ball the teams says exploded and injured a player.
The Sacramento Bee reports the settlement was reached with Italian manufacturer Ledraplastic.
Roger Dreyer, the attorney who represented the NBA team and injured swingman Francisco Garcia, told the newspaper the settlement amount was confidential. But he described it as extremely favorable to his clients.
The Kings and Garcia claimed the ball exploded while Garcia was balancing on it and lifting weights, causing injuries that included a broken forearm.
He missed four months during the first year of a contract extension. The Kings sought to recover his salary. Garcia sued for loss of earning capacity, and pain and suffering.
