Gilman Award to be presented at FBA lunch

The Federal Bar Association will present its 2013 Leonard R. Gilman Award Luncheon on Tuesday, April 30 at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit.

The 2013 Gilman Award recipient is Timothy Baughman, who has worked as an attorney with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office since shortly after he received his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1974.

He became the office’s chief of Research, Training and Appeals in 1986.

Baughman has appeared numerous times in the U.S. Supreme Court, winning six of the seven cases he has argued.

He has also supervised the briefing and argument of four other cases in that court, as well as appearing more than 60 times in the Michigan Supreme Court.

Baughman is the author of two books, and various articles on criminal law and criminal procedure.

He taught Criminal Procedure for eight years as an adjunct professor of law at Wayne State University Law School; was appointed as reporter by the Michigan Supreme Court for its Committee to Revise the Rules of Criminal Procedure; and lectures for the National College of District Attorneys, the Michigan Judicial Institute, the State Bar of Michigan, the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan, and various state prosecutor’s offices around the country.

Guest speaker for the lunch will be retired Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Edward Sosnick.

He was first elected to the Circuit Court bench in 1989, where he served for 24 years until he retired at the end of his term in January 2013.

During his tenure, Sosnick served two terms as the court’s chief judge; presided over the county’s family-focused Juvenile Drug Court for nine years; and co-founded the court’s SMILE Program, which serves to educate divorcing parents.

Previously, Sosnick served as a judge of the 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills for four years.  Before joining the bench he was a prosecuting attorney, city attorney, and worked in private practice.

Tickets for the 2013 Leonard R. Gilman Award Luncheon are $25 for FBA Members and $35 for non-members.
