A baseball treasure

A 1957 photo of Jackie Robinson, the late Brooklyn Dodger star who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, is among the treasured keepsakes belonging to U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Damon J. Keith. The photo of Robinson (left) and Keith was taken at Detroit’s old Gotham Hotel in 1957, the year that the Hall of Fame great retired from baseball. The popularity of the movie “42” that chronicles Robinson’s life has renewed interest in the baseball trailblazer. The movie stars actor Harrison Ford who portrays Dodger owner Branch Rickey, the visionary executive credited with rocketing Robinson to fame. Keith, not surprisingly, also has a photo of Ford in his office. That shot was taken of Keith, Ford and Alan Pakula, the producer of “Presumed Innocent,” a legal thriller that was filmed in Detroit in the late ‘80s.
