Macomb's Business Court receives national honors

Macomb County’s Business Court has been honored with a 2013 Achievement Award by the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Due to its “exceptional results and unique innovations,” the NACo said, the program had been chosen to receive the top honor in the  Court Administration and Management category.

The court was launched in November 2011 by Macomb County Circuit Court and was recognized as the first such court in the state of Michigan.

Officials said the court was created in response to the need of the business community to reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of complex business litigation.

The award will be presented during the NACo Awards Luncheon on July 21 in Tarrant County, TX.

About one dozen other Macomb County programs and initiatives also were being recognized by the national organization.

“These awards are a reflection that Macomb County is an example of good governance,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.  “We are constantly evolving to provide the best possible services to our residents.”

Other winning programs included two from the Macomb County Community Services Agency (MCCSA) and one each for Macomb County Senior Citizen Services and the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development.

MCCSA won awards for increasing participation in its Liquid Meal Program, which provides meals to homebound seniors, and for improving efficiencies in its transportation through use of GPS.

Senior Citizen Services received accolades for its program “Taking the Mystery Out of Retirement,” which helps seniors through the retirement process.

Planning & Economic Development garnered a NACo award for creating the Macomb-OU INCubator, which provides support to businesses, because it was developed as a result of successful collaboration between the local community and university.

The Macomb County Clerk/Register of Deeds office also received recognition in the following areas:

• The circuit court duty tracking dashboard that helps promote accountability.

• Efforts by the county clerk and the Secretary of State to offer one-stop shopping.

• Electronic court dispositions that speed paperwork to jail.

• The FastPass system that allows customers to avoid waiting in line.

• The automated circuit court sentence scheduling system.

• An online mortgage redemption service that helps homeowners avoid foreclosure and save.

• The Register of Deeds e-mail alert system that allows early detection of fraud.

The awards will be presented at the NACo Annual Conference in Pennsylvania in July.
