Initiative aimed at creating 'a meaningful dialogue'

The Macomb County Bar Foundation has announced the launch this week of a History Book Club series billed as “a terrific learning experience” for all.

Co-sponsor in the initiative is Barnes & Noble Inc. with the meetings held at the book store in Shelby Township. The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

The meetings, which will be held the second Thursday of every month, are free and open to the public.

The History Book Club, facilitated by Macomb Community College Adjunct History professor and attorney Steve Steinhardt, will read about, explore and discuss the connection of the past to current events, according to the foundation.

Books and conversation will be focused on constitutional history, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the courts and other significant historical events, and why these topics are of importance today.

“This is a great way for our members to interact with the public and serve  the community on matters of common interest,” said Lori Finazzo, foundation president. “Even though we are studying the past, there are so many parallels to what is happening today.

“This will be a terrific learning experience not only for our members, but also for history buffs and members of the public as well.  We hope this can create a meaningful dialogue.”

Susan Taylor-Meyers, Barnes & Noble communication relations manager, said the club “is perfect for anyone interested in reading about history in a new light.

“Whether you are just beginning your history journey or you are a long-time reader of history, our History Book Club is for you,” she said.

The book picked for this week’s gathering, she said, is “Supreme Power: Franklin Roosevelt vs. the Supreme Court” by Jeff Shesol.

Julie Gatti, Macomb County Bar Association president, said the series will be “interesting and informative.”

“We are expecting good things to come from this,” she said. “Hopefully, people with different viewpoints will be able to discuss and explain their beliefs in a way unlike so much of the divisive rhetoric we see on television and often in political campaigns.

Gatti said the foundation’s purpose “is to serve the public, but our members get so much back in return as well.”

The Barnes & Noble  store is located at 14165 Hall Road.

Light refreshments will be served to participants during the initial meeting.

The foundation is the charitable affiliate of the Macomb County Bar Association. Its mission is “to identify, initiate and support law related education projects and programs for the betterment of the community.”
