Scholarship awards presented at luncheon
The annual joint luncheon of the Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, and the Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan will be held on Tuesday, November 19 at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit.
The program, which begins at 11:30 a.m., will feature presentation of the Federal Bar Foundation’s annual Rakow Scholarship Awards to students from each of Michigan’s law schools along with presentation of the Barbara J. Rom Award for Bankruptc Excellence.
There also will be a special Historical Society program featuring Victoria Saker Woeste, author of “Henry Ford’s War on Jews and the Legal Battle Against Hate Speech.
The cost is $25 for FBA members, $35 for non-members.

LAD workshop focuses on small claims court
Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) will conduct a free workshop for residents of Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties on how to represent themselves in small claims court and collect money judgments on Tuesday, November 19 at the Sterling Heights Public Library.
Hours of the event are 6-8 p.m.; the library is located at 40255 Dodge Park Road.
The workshop will feature a presentation on mediation options by the Resolution Center.
Registration is not required, but seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Man who claimed excessive police force wins high court ruling
WESTLAND (AP) — A man badly injured in a confrontation with a Detroit-area police officer has settled a lawsuit for about $700,000 and received vindication of sorts from the Michigan Supreme Court.
Jeff Kodlowski says he was beaten in the head in 2009 by Westland Officer Kyle Dawley who was responding to a call about a minor incident involving Kodlowski, his wife and a phone.
Audio of the alleged assault was recorded by another officer who had a lapel microphone turned on. Attorney Joe Corriveau says the lawsuit was settled earlier this year.
In a separate but related matter, Kodlowski was convicted of resisting arrest in the incident. But the state high court said the jury should have been allowed to see photos of Kodlowski’s injuries.

Actor seeks class-action status for Macy’s suit
NEW YORK (AP) — An actor on HBO’s “Treme” is seeking class-action status for his profiling lawsuit against Macy’s.
A lawyer for actor Robert Brown, 29, filed the papers recently in federal court in New York City. He says he was stopped buying a $1,350 Movado watch and targeted because he’s black.
The lawsuit says many others have been targeted at the store because of race.
The suit says Macy’s has not changed its wrongful security practices, even after a 2005 settlement with the attorney general over racial profiling complaints. A separate lawsuit against New York police says the department encourages the practices.
Macy’s didn’t comment on the suit but says it doesn’t discriminate.
A judge must approve class-action status.
