Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) recently conducted a free workshop for residents of Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties on how to represent themselves in small claims court and collect money judgments on at the Pontiac Public Library. Kelly Bidelman (second from left), managing attorney of LAD’s Oakland County office in Pontiac, conducted the workshop, one of a series on the subject that LAD presents in the tri-county area. Plaintiffs can only sue for money in small claims court, up to $5,000, Bidelman said. “And you give up your rights to representation by an attorney, a jury and an appeal to a higher court,” she said. Megan Dennis (far right), a mediation specialist with Oakland Mediation Center, discussed mediation as an alternative to suing in small claims court. Also taking part in the program were (left to right) Tina Saxon, a student at Thomas M. Cooley Law School and an intern; and Shakita Billy, a librarian’s assistant at the Pontiac Public Library.
