Joan Vestrand (center), associate dean of Cooley Law School’s Ann Arbor campus, was presented with the Eastern Leaders Group 2013 Leadership Award at a ceremony held recently at the residence of Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin. The award was presented by Eastern Leaders Group co-chairs Leigh Greden (left), vice president of government and community relations at Eastern Michigan University, and Robert Tetens, director of the Department of Parks and Recreation for Washtenaw County.  The honor was presented to recognize the work involved in establishing a student court at Ypsilanti Community High School (YCHS). Cooley Law students manage and preside over the court of the wrongdoer’s peers in determining appropriate action following behavior in violation of the school’s code of conduct. Vestrand designed the court, and this year it will include a peacemaking component to mirror changes to the Washtenaw County courts.
