Learning about small claims court

Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) recently conducted a free workshop for residents of  Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties on how to represent themselves in small claims court and collect money judgments. Michelle Johnson (far right), managing attorney for LAD’s Detroit-Wayne County office, conducted the workshop at Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn. Welcoming Johnson to the event were (left to right) Tomika Horne, an LAD staff attorney, and Isabella Rowan, a librarian at Henry Ford Centennial Library. Small claims court is less formal and time-consuming than higher courts, Johnson said, but the plaintiff waives the right to be represented by an attorney, the right to a jury trial, and the right to appeal the court’s decision.
