Mock trial competition held at courthouse

The Macomb County Circuit Courthouse was a busy place on Saturday, March 1 as students from across the county gathered to compete in the Regional Michigan High School Mock Trial Tournament. The event was hosted by the Macomb County Bar Foundation and the Michigan Center for Civic Education and attracted teams from Anchor Bay, Capac, Warren Cousino, Warren DeLeSalle, Grosse Pointe South, Lake Shore, Lakeview, Lutheran North in Macomb and Richmond High Schools. Among those who helped organize the event and volunteer as presiding judges, scoring judges and court officers were (left to right): Rick Troy, executive director of the Macomb County Bar Association; Lori Smith; Laura Kubit; Ryan Zemke; Jeffrey May; Geoffrey Weed; retired Circuit Court Judge Antonio Viviano; 37th District Court Judge Matthew Sabaugh; Renee Tegel, tournament co-director; John DeMoss, MCBA president-elect; Kristin Stone; Lori Henderson; Lori Finazzo, foundation president; and Philip Vera. The students competed as prosecutors and defendants in a fictitious murder case. Grosse Pointe South and Capac won the competition and advanced to the State Tournament in Lansing.
