Michigan, 43 states settle with drugmaker

LANSING (AP) — A multinational drugmaker is paying Michigan, 43 other states and the District of Columbia $105 million to settle complaints that the company unlawfully marketed three drugs.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced last week that Michigan’s share of the settlement is $2.6 million.

The settlement resolves allegations that London-based GlaxoSmithKline illegally marketed Advair, Paxil and Wellbutrin for purposes that hadn’t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

GSK is prohibited from disseminating information that describes any so-called off-label use.

The asthma drug Advair is Glaxo’s best-selling product. Paxil and Wellbutrin are antidepressants.

Man files lawsuit over time spent in prison

IONIA (AP) — A man who was freed in 2012 after serving 26 years behind bars in the arson deaths of his wife and two young daughters is suing police and prosecutors.

David Gavitt’s federal lawsuit names state fire marshal’s investigators, Ionia police and Ionia County prosecutors.

The lawsuit says the defendants conspired to create a false case against Gavitt, who now lives in Portage.

Killed in the 1985 fire were Gavitt’s wife, Angela, and his 3-year-old and 11-month-old daughters. Gavitt was hurt in the blaze, which authorities at the time said he set.

Gavitt was freed after efforts by the Michigan Innocence Clinic.

Coast Guard issues permit for new bridge

DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a key permit needed for construction of a new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

The Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News report that word of the permit came last week.

Gov. Rick Snyder and Canada are trying to build the bridge over the Detroit River that would compete with the Ambassador Bridge. Property on both sides of the border still must be acquired, and funding for a new customs plaza on the U.S. side still must be addressed.

A federal judge recently disagreed with private owners of the existing bridge, who claim a permit would cause “irreparable harm.” It was a defeat for Manuel “Matty” Moroun, whose family controls the Ambassador Bridge and wants to build its own second span.
