Man fights extradition to Scotland

BOSTON (AP) — A lawyer for a Massachusetts man fighting extradition to Scotland where he faces attempted murder charges for allegedly poisoning a fellow college student’s wine says her client should not be sent overseas because of his mental illness.

The lawyer for Alexander Hilton, 22, of Princeton recently told three judges from the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston y that Hilton takes several medications for numerous psychological conditions and is a suicide risk.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that Hilton is appealing a lower court’s ruling that he should be returned to Scotland.

Scottish authorities say Hilton was studying at the University of St. Andrews in March 2011 when he spiked another American’s wine with methanol, making him severely ill.

Legionnaire’s lawsuit settled for $227K

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A federal judge has approved a $227,500 settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the estate of a Navy veteran who died of Legionnaire’s disease at a Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs hospital.

The veteran, John Ciarolla, 83, of North Versailles, died of the pneumonia — which is spread by bacteria commonly found in water supplies — on July 18, 2011, less than a month after he was admitted to the VA hospital in the city’s Oakland section for a urinary tract infection.

The settlement was first reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Ciarolla is one of at least six Pittsburgh VA patients who died of Legionnaire’s between February 2011 and November 2012.

Judge OKs bedbug lawsuit settlement

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Polk County judge has approved a $2.45 million settlement of a lawsuit over bedbugs at two downtown Des Moines apartment towers.

The Des Moines Register says Judge Robert Blink recently approved the settlement between the class-action group and First Baptist Elderly Housing Foundation, First Baptist Housing Foundation and American Baptist Homes of the Midwest.

Residents of Elsie Mason Manor and Ligutti Tower filed the lawsuit in March 2010 seeking money for back rent, lost property and other hardships.

One of the group’s attorneys says residents, former residents and some family members of deceased former residents are expected to receive payments within seven to 10 days.

The amounts will range from about $200 to $11,000.
