A report released recently by the Michigan Office of the Auditor General says the Office of Child Support through its Michigan State Disbursement Unit is effective in ensuring that child support collection and distribution is accurate and timely.
Auditors had no findings of deficiencies or recommendations for improvement.
“I am proud of the work done by our Office of Child Support,” said DHS Director Maura Corrigan. “The audit confirms that we effectively collect and distribute child support dollars. That means children have the support they need and deserve.
The $2.6 billion in child support received during the audit period, she said, “is pumped into Michigan’s economy and helps many families achieve financial independence rather than relying on public assistance — which saves taxpayers money.”
The Office of Child Support contractor that distributes child support payments did so with a 99.9 percent accuracy rate from June 1, 2012, through March 31, 2014, according to the audit.
It also disbursed 98.5 percent of child support payments within the two-day federal requirement.
Auditors also said the Office of Child Support effectively monitored the accuracy and completeness of bank accounts used for child support activities.
It’s the second consecutive audit to say the Office of Child Support was effective in meeting all objectives assessed by auditors.
An October 2012 audit also had no findings of deficiencies.
The office was handling payments for nearly one million children as of the end of June.
