Appeals court judge announces retirement

Michigan Court of Appeals Judge William C. Whitbeck has announced his retirement, effective Nov. 21.

Elected three times to the Michigan Court of Appeals, Whitbeck has served on the court since 1997, including six years as chief judge. His term expires Jan. 2, 2017.

In addition to his service on the Court of Appeals, Whitbeck served three Michigan governors — George Romney, William Milliken and John Engler.

“Bill Whitbeck’s service to Michigan in both the judicial and executive branches of government is a testament to his keen legal intellect, administrative skill and policy-making acumen,” said Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young Jr. “Those qualities combined to help him to make the Court of Appeals worthy of national recognition as a model appellate court while he served as its chief judge.”

Whitbeck received his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University.

Prior to serving on the bench, Whitbeck was director of the Office of State Employer, director of policy for the Public Service Commission and director of the Detroit office for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
