State attorney eyeing top NFLPA post
DETROIT (AP) — Michigan-based attorney Jim Acho says he’s running for executive director of the NFL Players Association.
The 44-year-old Acho has represented retired players and been an advocate for improving pension and medical benefits. He says he expects to have no trouble obtaining the support of at least three current player representatives on the board of directors, which is the requirement to become a final candidate for executive director.
Acho acknowledges that he would be a long shot to win the election in March. DeMaurice Smith has been the NFLPA’s executive director since 2009.
Acho says his platform is based on improving long-term health care benefits, an issue he hopes now resonates with players even while they are active.

Man in court for assault knocks out deputy
DETROIT (AP) — A suburban Detroit man already in trouble for an assault on a police officer last month has been arrested on accusations he hit and knocked out a sheriff’s deputy at a courthouse.
The Detroit News says that 29-year-old Deandre Wilson was with his caseworker at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in Detroit last Friday when he struck 32-year-old Deputy Crystal Dominguez in the head.
Sheriff Benny Napoleon says Wilson was in court for a hearing on charges of assaulting a Taylor police officer last month.
Wilson was arraigned Saturday on fresh charges of resisting and obstructing a police officer. A judge in Romulus set his bond at $300,000 and scheduled a probable cause hearing in Detroit District Court.

Police try to solve holiday ring mystery
GERMANTOWN, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin police department is trying to figure out who left a diamond ring on its Christmas tree.
Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell posted a note on his department’s Facebook page Saturday, asking if anyone knew where the ring came from.
He says the diamonds are real. Police think someone intentionally placed the ring on a branch of the tree in the police department’s lobby.
For the past five weeks, the department invited people to bring their children to decorate the tree and get a stuffed animal in return.
During that time, someone put the ring on the tree but left no explanation.
Germantown is northwest of Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that anyone claiming the ring will have to provide a detailed description.

Settlement reached in inmate’s death
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — The mother of a man who died in a southwest Missouri jail after being strapped in a restraint chair for several hours has settled her lawsuit against Jasper County and other defendants.
An attorney for Jane Brown of Joplin says she received $250,000 in her lawsuit over the December 2012 death of her son, 43-year-old Richard Watson, in the Jasper County jail.
Attorney Brandon Potter said the rest of the settlement is confidential.
The Joplin Globe reports Watson suffered from physical and psychological issues.
The lawsuit alleged Watson was placed in an emergency restraint chair after injuring his head in a fall and was left for at least 21 hours without proper food, water or his medications.
