World War II plaque finds new home

TROY (AP) — A bronze plaque honoring World War II veterans has been moved from the site of a former department store in downtown Detroit to a mall in Troy.

A rededication ceremony was held Tuesday at the Macy’s store in Oakland Mall as the monument originally displayed at J.L. Hudson Co. was installed in its new home.

The 8-foot-wide by 9-foot-tall plaque was at Hudson’s downtown location from 1947 until its closure in 1983. It sat in storage for a decade before it resurfaced at another Macy’s location in Northland Center, which closed about two months ago.

The memorial now hangs near the elevators just inside Macy’s north entrance at the Troy shopping mall. It bears the name of about 1,150 Hudson’s workers who served in the war.
