Gov. Rick Snyder this week announced the appointment of Shelby Township attorney Joseph Toia to fill a vacancy on Macomb County Circuit Court.
“Throughout his career, Joseph has distinguished himself as an excellent lawyer and as a leader in community service,” Snyder said.
The governor said he was confident that Toia’s experience “will prove to be a great asset to the Macomb Circuit Court.”
Toia, 61, fills a vacancy created by the retirement earlier this year of Judge John C. Foster. He must seek election in November 2016 for the balance of the term expiring January 1, 2021.
Toia runs his own practice in Shelby Township and also serves as the prosecuting attorney for the Charter Township of Orion.
He has worked on a broad variety of legal matters throughout his career, with considerable experience in the areas of business, family, criminal and municipal law.
Toia is active in his community, currently serving as a member of Kiwanis Club of Utica-Shelby and the Fraternal Order of Police, and a growing charitable organization he started called ‘Friends of Foster Kids’, which provides holiday presents to local children in foster care.
He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Macomb County Bar, the American Bar Association and the Italian American Bar Association.
Toia earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Wayne State University and a degree from the Detroit College of Law.
Others on the list of finalists for the job were 39th District Court Judge Joseph Boedeker, 40th District Court Judge Mark Fratarcangeli and Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Jean Cloud.
