Retiring physician donates $2M to hospital

ROYAL OAK (AP) — A retiring Michigan physician plans to cap off his 61-year career in cardiology with a $2 million gift to a hospital in Royal Oak.

Dr. Gerald C. Timmis of Bloomfield Hills is creating an endowed chair at Beaumont Hospital in honor of his late wife, Dorothy, who died in 2004.

His colleague, Dr. Simon Dixon, will be the inaugural holder of the Dorothy Susan Timmis Endowed Chair of Cardiology.

Timmis graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1955. He has held academic appointments at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Oakland University William Beaumont Hospital School of Medicine.

The 85-year-old will retire at the end of the month from Beaumont Hospital, where he served on the medical staff for 51 years.
