Joan Vestrand (center), associate dean at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus, spoke recently during the Coast Guard’s annual Ethics Forum at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The topic of Vestrand’s speech was “Principled Leadership: The Road from Good to Great.” The forum provides the Corps of Cadets with a day of lectures, panels and small group dialogues on the topic of ethical situations in the Coast Guard and beyond. Welcoming Vestrand to the forum were Thomas Gelwicks (left), U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and Thomas Gelwicks Jr., Citadel Military Academy chief warrant officer. Vestrand met Gelwicks Jr. during her first year speaking at the Coast Guard Ethics Forum and has since been invited to speak at the Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, SC.
