Vets Returning Home (VRH) held its annual golf outing recently at Wabeek Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.
VRH has housed more than 400 veterans in the three years it has been in existence. The organization is fully staffed by volunteers and receives no funding from the government. Its goal is to help homeless veterans of war get back on their feet.
Sandy Bower, founder of VRH, commented that it was a “special honor” to have VRH be the charity chosen by the Tiger alumni to benefit from their annual golf outing.
Bower said it “was so humbling to see the Tiger alumni coming together in support of the veterans who need so much.”
A special guest at the outing was Oakland Count Executive L. Brooks Patterson.
Garth Wooten, director of Veterans Affairs for Oakland County, was on hand along with other county personnel.
A strong supporter of VRH and a U.S. Army veteran himself, retired Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Fred M. Mester was “thrilled to see the Tiger alumni come from all parts of the country to support VRH.”
Alumni in attendance included Jack Morris, Al Kaline, Lou Whitaker, Mickey Stanley, Mickey Lolich and Mike Henneman.
“The event was filled to capacity and a wonderful day was had by all in attendance,” said Mester.
