ROYAL OAK (AP) — Voters in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties have decided to renew a special property tax to help fund operations at the Detroit Zoo.

Ron Kagan, executive director of the Detroit Zoological Society, told The Detroit News the zoo is “very appreciative to the public which continues to vote — not only with their feet by visiting the zoo but also with their ballots.”

Voters on Tuesday were asked to renew a 0.1-mill tax for 10 years. For a homeowner whose home is worth $200,000, the cost is $10 a year. 

Money is used for zoo operations and maintenance.
