The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit recently appointed Maria L. Oxholm as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Iowa, an appointment that took effect August 18. Under an agreement as part of a Bankruptcy Judge Vacancy Pilot Program, Oxholm was assigned to a duty station in Detroit and is sitting as a bankruptcy judge in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Last month, Oxholm (third from right) was officially sworn in during a ceremony in Bankruptcy Judge Phillip J. Shefferly’s courtroom. On hand to welcome Oxholm to the court were (left to right) Judges Daniel S. Opperman, Walter Shapero, Marci B. McIvor, Mark A. Randon and Phillip J. Shefferly. Oxholm graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1988, then worked as a law clerk for the Immigration Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and, from 1989 to 1999, worked as an assistant Wayne County prosecuting attorney specializing in child abuse and domestic violence prosecutions. In 1999, she was appointed to the Wayne County 36th District Court, becoming the first Hispanic woman judge to serve on that bench. In 2002, Oxholm was appointed and elected to Wayne County Circuit Court and assigned to the Family Division.
