Nominations sought for SBM commission

The State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners is seeking names of persons interested in appointment to the Trial Court Funding Commission which was recently created through Public Act 65 of 2017.


The commission is tasked with reviewing and recommending changes to the trial court funding system in light of People v. Cunningham, 496 Mich 145 (2015).

Among other duties, the commission will review and recommend changes to the methods by which the courts impose and allocate fees and costs along with any statutory changes necessary to effectuate the Commission’s recommendations.

Individuals interested in seeking appointment to the panel must have significant experience or involvement in Michigan courts. 

Under the Act, the governor will appoint two members to the commission nominated by the State Bar of Michigan. The commission is required to submit a final report to the governor and Legislature by September 2019.

Deadline for responses is Aug. 17.

Those applying for the appointment should submit a resume and a letter outlining the applicant’s background and nature of interest in the position.
