Tesla driver’s family doesn’t blame car for his death

DETROIT (AP) — The family of a man who died when his Tesla sedan struck a tractor-trailer says it doesn't blame the car or its partially self-driving Autopilot system for his death.

Joshua Brown's family released the statement Monday, the day before the National Transportation Safety Board was scheduled to decide the cause of the crash.

Brown, 40, died May 7, 2016, in Williston, Florida, after a tractor-trailer turned in front of him. He was using Autopilot, which should brake automatically if it senses an impending collision.

Brown's family says he loved his Model S and understood Autopilot's limitations. They believe Brown and his car simply failed to see the truck in the moment before the crash.

Brown's family says Tesla also has made "significant improvements" in its software because of the accident.

Michigan college settles in nursing student’s lawsuit

FLINT (AP) — A Michigan college has been ordered to pay a woman's nursing school tuition after she was dismissed for questioning lessons she says taught students to scare patients into vaccinations.

The Flint Journal reports that Nichole Rolfe was recently awarded about $15,000 in a lawsuit against Baker College.

Rolfe sued the college in 2015, saying an instructor at the school's Owosso campus told students to threaten and panic patients into immunization. She says another instructor talked about misinforming new fathers on getting vaccinated for whooping cough before seeing newborns.

Rolfe says she was kicked out of the program after questioning both instructors. The school says Rolfe was removed because she was overly aggressive.

An attorney for the college says Baker is "very pleased with the settlement."

Teenage girls behind  ‘It’ balloon prank

LITITZ, Pa. (AP) — A girl says she and her friends are behind the red balloons found tied to sewer grates in a small Pennsylvania town, not a homicidal clown.

Seventeen-year-old Peyton Reiff tells PennLive.com the girls were trying to scare their friends in Lititz after seeing a trailer for the upcoming movie "It."

A red balloon is the calling card of Pennywise, the sewer-dwelling, child-eating clown in Stephen King's novel-turned-movie.

Reiff says the teens were surprised at how much attention the prank got after the local police made a playful post on Facebook, saying they were "completely terrified" to remove the balloons.

Reiff says they will meet with the department for a "funny follow up," but says they are not being punished

Police: Thieves take SUV pulling U-Haul with casket inside

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Police say thieves have stolen an SUV and an attached U-Haul trailer — with a casket inside — outside an Albuquerque motel.

Albuquerque police say the coffin heist occurred early Monday at a Residence Inn.

Authorities say the casket contained the body of the victim's father-in-law.

Police are searching for a black 2005 Chevy Trailblazer SUV with Oklahoma license plates.

No arrests have been made.
