Access to Bankruptcy Court (ABC) recently hosted its annual charity networking and silent auction at the offices of Stevenson & Bullock PC in Southfield. Among those attending and lending their support were (left to right) Tracy Clark, Judy Calton, Lauren Rousseau, Anthony Kochis, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Marci McIvor, Paul Hague, Judith Greenstone Miller, Alesia Dobbins, Jim Plemmons, Andrea Cartwright, David Tovarez and Ethan Dunn. ABC is a non-profit organization designed to help eligible area residents who cannot afford an attorney to navigate through the complex bankruptcy system. ABC screens and assigns potential debtors to a panel of bankruptcy attorneys with experience and skill in handling personal bankruptcy cases. The attorney handles the bankruptcy case pro bono or receives a reduced flat fee after the debtor is discharged of his or her debts. ABC has also collaborated with WMU-Cooley to partner attorneys with WMU-Cooley students to handle bankruptcy cases under the program. The student receives training in Chapter 7 bankruptcy practice then meets with the attorney and the client and assists the attorney in preparing the case for filing and handling matters after the filing as needed to obtain a discharge for the client.
