Group challenges state redistricting ballot initiative
LANSING (AP) — A group is challenging a ballot initiative that aims to end political gerrymandering by empowering an independent commission to draw the state's congressional and legislative districts.
Citizens Protecting Michigan's Constitution filed a challenge with the state elections board, a day after it also sued in the state appeals court. The organization has ties to the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, which opposes the ballot initiative.
It contends the Voters Not Politicians initiative does not list all the sections of the state constitution that would be abrogated and contends such a proposal must be considered at a constitutional convention instead.
In December, organizers of the ballot drive submitted more than 425,000 signatures. The elections bureau is in the process of reviewing the petitions.
Hear ye, hear ye — eh? State Supreme Court hears case in U.P.
SAULT STE. MARIE (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court has crossed the Mackinac Bridge for the first time, hearing a case in the Upper Peninsula as part of an effort to take its work outside Lansing.
The case is a dispute over liability in a golf cart crash in suburban Detroit. A golfer was hurt when he was struck by a cart driven by another golfer. Is it a case of ordinary negligence or a higher legal standard known as reckless misconduct?
The court heard arguments Wednesday at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie. Michigan’s top court has had two justices from Sault Ste. Marie, the last in 1973.
Dog bites police horse taking part in mounted unit event
WILMERDING, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a dog in a yard near a police mounted unit event in Pennsylvania escaped and bit one of the participating horses on its legs.
Allegheny County police say its mounted unit and one from Pittsburgh were in Wilmerding to talk to a citizens group about the responsibilities of the units.
Police say a dog that hadn't been properly secured escaped from a yard and bit a Pittsburgh police horse named Jack, leaving the animal with puncture wounds on his front legs and near his back legs.
The dog was quarantined while officials tried to determine whether it was up to date with all vaccinations. A vet examined the horse, which appeared to be experiencing no further problems.
Charity road race in Texas starts and ends with a beer
BOERNE, Texas (AP) — So many people have registered for a very short road race near San Antonio that no other "underachievers" are allowed to enroll.
The first Boerne (BER'-nee) 0.5K is scheduled for May 5 in the city of the same name.
Organizers say their city permit won't allow more than 100 "fellow underachievers" on the 546-yard course.
Race entry costs $25. The event is raising funds for Blessings in a Backpack, which provides foods at the weekend for underprivileged children.
There's also a VIP option: For big shots not wishing to expend any energy, a 1963 Volkswagen bus will transport them the length of the course for an extra $25.
A couple of brewpubs are sponsoring the event, and participants will get free beer at the start and finish lines.
