Judge dismisses 2003 lawsuit over Dow dioxin contamination

SAGINAW (AP) — Dow Chemical has prevailed in a long-running lawsuit by property owners over dioxin contamination along the Tittabawassee River.

TV station WJRT says the 2003 lawsuit was recently dismissed by a Saginaw County judge. Dow argued that the statute of limitations had long expired when the case was filed.

The company’s legal position was strengthened in January. The Michigan Supreme Court said the clock began to run when damage occurred, not in 2002 when regulators
publicly reported high levels of contamination in the river's flood plain.

WJRT says Dow has been cleaning up properties along the river by replacing contaminated soil. Property owners wanted to be compensated for lost land value and enjoyment of their property.

Detroit-area leader apologizes for ‘join the Klan’ remark

PONTIAC (AP) — A prominent Detroit-area leader has apologized for saying he'd rather join the Ku Klux Klan than a group of CEOs who are striving to improve Detroit.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said in a statement he chooses “sharp words” and purposely engages in hyperbole to get his points across.

Patterson in a letter recently accused CEOs group of snatching business from Oakland County to benefit Detroit. Asked Thursday by a reporter if he’d consider joining the CEOs group, Patterson, who is white, said he’d “rather join the Klan,” a white supremacist group.

After the apology, the Detroit branch of the NAACP said the region doesn’t need divisiveness between the suburbs and Detroit, which is majority black.

NASA experiment that included Trump note caused alarm

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — A suspicious package that fell from the sky over New Jersey caused some alarm because it contained a note that mentioned President Donald Trump.

South Brunswick police say the package, attached to a parachute, was making a hissing sound and included a note that said: “NASA Atmospheric Research Instrument NOT A BOMB!” If this lands near the President, we at NASA wish him a great round of golf.”

Trump has been staying at his golf club in Bedminster, which is 29 miles  away.

NASA tells WNBC-TV the package is part of six balloons launched to measure ozone. It says a summer student employee wrote the note in a “misguided attempt to be lighthearted.”

2 lives down, 7 to go: Cat survives being hit twice by cars

GRAFTON, N.Y. (AP) — A cat named Harley has used up two of its nine lives after surviving being hit by two vehicles on an upstate New York road.

Police say they recently received a report of a cat being struck by two vehicles in Grafton, just outside Albany.

When a trooper arrived on the scene, the cat was lying on the side of the road with head and leg injuries. The drivers said the cat ran into the road, where it was hit by one car and thrown into the path of the second vehicle.

The trooper took the cat to a nearby animal hospital. Its owner, found via Facebook, said Harley is doing well and expected to fully recover.
