Man who swallowed BBQ grill bristle loses lawsuit
QUINNESEC (AP) — A Michigan man who says he swallowed a stray bristle from a grill brush after barbecuing chicken has failed to persuade an appeals court to revive his lawsuit.
Robert Kaminski of the Upper Peninsula had surgery in 2014 to remove the metal bristle. He sued the maker of the grill brush, accusing The Libman Co. of negligence. He says the bristle caused abdominal bloating, intestinal damage and other problems.
But a federal appeals court last week ruled in favor of the company. The court agreed with Judge Robert Jonker, who said the brush was a simple tool that wasn’t unreasonably dangerous and didn’t require warnings.
The court says Kaminski could cite only a few other examples of Libman grill bristles causing injuries.
National Guard schedules exercises in Detroit
DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan Army National Guard is planning a series of emergency response exercises this week in Detroit.
The guard’s 46th Military Police Command is working with local, regional, federal and Canadian authorities. They intend to rehearse actions responding to hypothetical chemical, biological, nuclear or radiological attacks.
The exercises aim to simulate such attacks in a dense, urban environment. Locations include steam tunnels, the Detroit River, an office park and a skyscraper.
The three-day event kicked off Tuesday.
Church burglar leaves apology note after theft of equipment
WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — A man who broke into a Connecticut church and stole $3,000 worth of electronics apparently felt enough remorse to leave an apology note.
Police have released video of the man they say broke into Mount Olive AME Zion Church in Waterbury and stole cameras, monitors and a microphone used to broadcast religious services.
Members of the congregation tell WVIT-TV he also left a note that said “Pray 4 Me!! Sorry brothers. Save me,” and drew a little sad face.
Member Craig Smith says some members of the congregation heeded the note and prayed for the suspect at a later service.
Police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect to reach out to them.
Massachusetts zoo on the lookout for stork that flew away
STONEHAM, Mass. (AP) — Maybe she just had a few babies to deliver.
A Boston-area zoo is looking for a female stork that flew away last week and has evaded experts since.
The Stone Zoo in Stoneham posted on Facebook that the 3-foot-tall, white-bellied stork took off Friday during training for the “Masters of Flight: Birds of Prey” show.
The bird, named Las, was last seen Saturday at nearby Spot Pond.
Las has a white belly, dark iridescent purple wings, neck and back, a featherless face and a wingspan of about 3 feet.
The bird is not dangerous. The zoo says anyone who sees the stork should contact the zoo and not approach, because she might fly away.
